Wider Opportunities Workshops

A progressive unit of workshops... A specially designed INSET… Fairly traded instruments for your school...

Our workshops are an ideal way to enthuse pupils to go on and learn any musical instrument, particularly drum kit or orchestral percussion. We have worked closely with many music advisors and music services to develop these schemes of work. Lesson plans and follow-up materials are provided for all workshops.

Inspire-works facilitators can lead the units in the following formats:

5 x 1 hour sessions per class (half a term)

Totally hands-on sessions ideal as an introduction to West African drumming & song, Brazilian samba & song or Balinese gamelan.

10 x 1 hour sessions per class (whole term)

More in-depth with opportunities for pupils to develop their technique & improvisation skills. Pupils notate their own West African, Brazilian or Balinese inspired compositions.

20 x 1 hour sessions per class (2 terms)

One term each of two of our workshops - Balinese gamelan & Brazilian samba, Balinese gamelan & West African drumming, Brazilian samba & West African drumming.

30 x 1 hour sessions per class (3 terms)

One term each of all three workshops - Balinese gamelan, Brazilian samba & West African drumming.

As part of this process, the class teachers would learn alongside the pupils to enable them to continue an ensemble, if desired, once the unit has ended.

Inspire-works offer a 1½ hour INSET to further train the teachers, develop their skills and provide them with suggested lesson ideas and material. This could take place after school on one of the visits.

To complete the Wider Opportunities package, schools can buy our packs of West African or Brazilian Samba drums and percussion instruments, which are all tailor made appropriate for KS1 & KS2 children.

Mileage

Mileage is charged at 40p per mile outside a 15-mile radius of the facilitator's base. We use www.multimap.co.uk to assist our mileage calculations.
